Hi everyone! My name is Jayden and I recently graduated from UVic with a degree in psychology! I’m taking some time after my Bachelor’s degree in order to upgrade some courses and take some prerequisites for masters programs. I’m excited to delve deeper into education courses, as I believe what I learn will be a great asset to my work with youth!
What interests you about social media and personalized learning?
Something that I find interesting about social media and personalized learning is how engaging and accessible it can be for the learner. Given that personalized learning encompasses a student-centered approach, it makes sense to use technology with which the student is most proficient. Therefore, since the majority of youth today have grown up using social media, it’s undoubtedly a valuable tool in education.

What is your understanding of digital literacy and its importance in education?
My understanding of digital literacy is that it refers to the ability to effectively use and comprehend digital technology. This includes being able to create content and search for information efficiently. Digital literacy is important in education, as it enables learners to navigate online technology in an effective and safe manner. Digital technology is increasingly used in workplaces. I’ve used almost all Microsoft applications in both administrative and clinical roles, so I can recognize the importance for educators to properly equip students with digital literacy regardless of their career path.

What digital tools do you use in your learning?
I use a variety of digital tools in my learning that promote accessibility. Below are the digital tools I rely on most for schoolwork.
- Google Docs: The flexibility of being able to pick up working on an assignment on any device makes Google Docs very convenient. It’s also handy for group work, as multiple members can edit and add comments to assignments simultaneously.
- Quizlet: Quizlet has been crucial for my success in memorization-based multiple choice exams. Being able to reference my notes and quiz myself throughout the day has helped me consolidate course content seamlessly.
What has your experience been with Personalized Learning Networks (PLNs) and how do you plan to use them throughout this course?
My experience with Personal Learning Networks (PLNs) has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s through various PLNs that I’ve had the opportunity to hold various degree-related positions that I’m not sure I would have been available to find on my own. One position in particular was offered to me because a colleague of mine resigned from her role and recommended me to her employer. After being hired, she mentored me and taught me invaluable information about the field that I would not have otherwise received. I plan to continue to utilize my PLN through this course by sharing my experiences and seeking advice from classmates about how they grew their PLNs. By staying connected to classmates and interacting on blog posts, I hope that we may even become a part of each other’s PLNs.
